Background of the Study
Mental health issues are a significant public health concern globally, yet they remain highly stigmatized, particularly in low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria. In Gombe Local Government Area, Gombe State, cultural and religious beliefs often perpetuate negative attitudes toward individuals with mental health conditions, resulting in social exclusion and inadequate access to healthcare. Development communication has emerged as a crucial tool in combating mental health stigma, leveraging media platforms, participatory communication, and public awareness campaigns to foster understanding and acceptance (Abubakar & Suleiman, 2023). By encouraging open dialogue, challenging misconceptions, and promoting mental health literacy, development communication can play a transformative role in reducing stigma and improving mental health outcomes in Gombe LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite increasing awareness of mental health globally, stigma remains a critical barrier to mental health care in Gombe LGA. Misconceptions and cultural taboos surrounding mental illness often discourage individuals from seeking help or disclosing their conditions, leading to neglect and worsening outcomes (Bala & Ibrahim, 2024). The underutilization of targeted communication strategies exacerbates these challenges, leaving significant gaps in public understanding and community support for mental health. This study examines the role of development communication in addressing these issues, exploring strategies to reduce stigma and promote mental health awareness in Gombe LGA.
